Wage and Hour Suits Skyrocketed in 2015

According to a report recently released by law firm Seyfarth Shaw, wage and hour lawsuits have risen 358% in the past 15 years, with 8,871 cases being filed in federal court in 2015 alone. The Washington Post reports that this skyrocket in cases is tied to Labor Department crackdowns on independent contractor misclassifications, as well as media attention surrounding local minimum wage increases and proposed changes to overtime rules.

The US jobs report released earlier today says that the economy added 211,000 jobs last month, topping the initial projection of 200,000. While the unemployment rate remained the same at 5 percent, The New York Times reports that economists were hoping to see stronger numbers as it relates to wage growth. The November report shows that hourly wages rose by just 0.2 percent, pushing the 12 month gain to 2.5 percent.

Be it a holiday party or event just a sales meeting, employers must be diligent in controlling alcohol ingestion.
