IRS Shortens Employee Social Security Numbers

In an effort to reduce identity theft, the IRS has released final regulations that allow employers to shorten employee social security numbers on Forms W-2 effective December 31, 2020.

Employers are not required to truncate the numbers; however, full taxpayer identification numbers are mandatory on all Form W-2 copies “filed with the Social Security Administration, and on those of payers of third-party sick pay to employers”.
