Freelance Isn’t Free Act Passed in NYC
The Mayor of New York City is expected to sign a new act recently passed by the NYC Council that provides wage theft protections for independent contractors. The “Freelance Isn’t Free Act” will require employers to provide a written contract to freelancers “for work worth at least $800, including multiple smaller projects aggregated over a 120 day period”. It also stipulates that employers must compensate independent contractors within the date specified on the contract, or within 30 days of work completion if no date is specified. NYC employers should review this new legislation in preparation of the act being signed into law.
