Fully-Paid Parental Leave in San Francisco

Blog Post 2.6.14Effective January 1, 2017, San Francisco employers with at least 50 employees will be required to provide new parents with six weeks of parental leave, with 100 percent of their regular wages paid and the assurance that the employee will be returned to their position when the leave ends. The “Paid Parental Leave Ordinance” will be mandated for employers with at least 35 employees beginning July 1, 2017, and for employers with at least 20 employees effective January 1, 2018. The new law covers both mothers and fathers, and applies to full time, part time, and temporary employees as long as they meet certain criteria. The law also covers employees who are adopting or fostering children. Employers should review the new law in detail to ensure they meet all the necessary requirements, including but not limited to posting the new “Paid Parental Leave Ordinance” notice.
