W-2 and Wire Transfer Scams

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released an alert on Monday, February 6^th warning employers about a Form W-2 emailing phishing scam. The email scam, which has grown to target not only the corporate world but also school districts and nonprofits, is often coupled with a request for a wire transfer of funds. The IRS warns that the scam can be detrimental, as “some companies have lost both employees’ W-2s and thousands of dollars due to wire transfers”. Employers must remain vigilant and should report all attempted W-2 scams to the IRS via email (phishing@irs.gov). Employers should also make employees aware of these scams, so that they too are on alert.
