New Benefit Trend: Student Loan Assistance

According to the USA Today, a new benefit trend is emerging in an effort to attract and retain talent – student loan assistance. The USA Today says that this new trending benefit is not just geared to millennials, but the thousands of Americans in their 30s, 40s, and 50s who are still struggling to pay off student loan debts.

Do Your Employees Hate the Holidays? Survey Says Yes. 

Business News Daily reports that while the holidays are supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year”, they can actually be the most dreaded period for many employees. A recent workplace psychological study found that when employers “force fun” on their teams, it often results in negative attitudes. 70 percent of those surveyed indicated their distaste for the holiday season stems from co-worker gift giving, while 30 percent said that their dislike is rooted in added stress due to year-end deadlines. 

Fewer Than 25% of Workers Anticipate Holiday Bonus

A recent survey conducted by personal finance website Bankrate indicates that fewer than 25% of American workers are expecting a holiday bonus this year. Fox Business reports that that many businesses are sticking to the more conservative bonus and compensation structures put in place during the financial crisis. Fox Business further notes that 39 percent of workers surveyed reported that a raise was on their wishlist for 2016, while 18 percent yearned for better health insurance.

2016 FLSA Proposed Changes
Employers should start preparing now for anticipated changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) in 2016, as the Department of Labor has indicated that their final regulations will most likely be issued in July of next year. These anticipated changes include an increase to exempt employee salary thresholds, an increase to “highly compensated” employee salary thresholds, and implementing employer penalties for the misclassification of employees. These changes will ultimately create an upsurge in employees who are eligible for overtime pay.

Every year, a growing number of companies find themselves on the wrong end of legal actions stemming from the behavior of their employees following the excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages at a company sponsored event. Be it a holiday party or event just a sales meeting, employers must be diligent in controlling alcohol ingestion.
