Key Survey Results: Payroll

In the OperationsInc Flash Survey on Payroll Services, we explore how long businesses reported it takes to process payroll, and where organizationally payroll is housed.

Key Findings:

  • 30% of respondents have under 50 employees on their payroll.
  • 25% of respondents have between 51 and 100 employees on their payroll.
  • 32% of respondents have between 101 and 500 employees on their payroll.
  • 13% of respondents have more than 500 employees on their payroll.

Key Finding:

  • Over 70% of respondents are processing their payroll in 8 hours or less.
  • Just over 17% of respondents are spending more than 15 hours to process their payroll.
  • 12% of respondents take between 9 and 15 hours to process their payroll.


Key Finding:

  • There’s a close split between Payroll being within HR (45%) or Finance/Accounting (37%).
  • Only one
    respondent indicated that Payroll was its own department.
  • Of the remaining 17%, the majority commented that Payroll is shared between HR and Finance/Accounting or somehow split up between the two.


Key Finding:

  • The most popular additional services that respondents receive from their payroll providers are Timekeeping (64%), HR Data Management (55%), and ACA-Related Services (46%).
