78% of Home-based Employees Are Working Anywhere but a Designated Home Office

04/14/2020

Norwalk, CT. [April 14, 2020] The COVID-19 outbreak quickly forced remote work arrangements for businesses throughout the country. But where are those employees working from, exactly?

A recent survey conducted by OperationsInc (www.OperationsInc.com), one of the nation’s largest human resources consulting firms, has found that 78 percent of remote employees are working from their homes in rooms other than a designated home office.

“COVID-19 drove workers into their homes without ample time to prepare or situate themselves in an ideal setting,” said David Lewis, CEO of OperationsInc. “Everyone is doing the best they can to create a long-term home workspace they never anticipated needing.”

Only 22 percent of those polled are working from dedicated home offices. Other workspaces indicated in the survey included:

  • 29% – Dining Room
  • 12% – Kitchen
  • 12% – Bedroom
  • 3% – Basement

An additional 15 percent surveyed indicated that they are working from some other area in their home, not mentioned above.

Many of these makeshift workplace setups have experts worried about the long-term impact on the physical health of remote workers.

“Given how long it may be before we can safely return to the office, there is significant concern tied to the anticipated increase in workplace injury,” Lewis added. “The less than perfect ergonomic setups we are working from will most likely lead to increased incidents of ‘workplace’ injuries, like carpal tunnel and head and neck pain.”

The OperationsInc has been guiding businesses on how to effectively manage and engage remote teams since 2001.

Survey data was collected online as part of OperationsInc’s ongoing free webinar series, “COVID-19: Your HR Questions Answered”. Over 400 remote workers throughout the United States participated in the poll, more than 75 percent of whom reside the northeast corridor.
