Alcohol Consumption is Up for Remote Workers in Quarantine

04/14/2020

Norwalk, CT. [April 14, 2020] A recent poll conducted by OperationsInc (www.OperationsInc.com), one of the nation’s largest human resources consulting firms, has confirmed what many have found to be anecdotally true – home-bound employees are drinking more.

Twenty-nine percent of those surveyed Friday by the HR consultancy indicated that their alcohol consumption has increased since social distancing measures and resulting quarantines were put in place.

“Perhaps the idea of regular Virtual Happy Hours is having an impact on these stats,” said OperationsInc CEO David Lewis. “Or, perhaps company organized Virtual Happy Hours are simply tapping into behaviors employees were already engaged in.”

Virtual happy hours using technology like Zoom and House Party have become increasingly popular ways for Americans to stay in touch, interact with others, and limit isolation felt due to social distancing.

Anxiety and stress tied to the public health crisis and resulting economic fallout may also have an impact on these numbers.

“If you have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), now is the time to make sure your employees know how to take advantage of it,” Lewis added.

Forty-seven percent of those polled have had no change is their alcohol-related behavior, six percent have been drinking less, and seventeen percent of those surveyed are non-drinkers.

Polling numbers were collected online as part of OperationsInc’s ongoing free webinar series, “COVID-19: Your HR Questions Answered”. Data was collected from over 400 participants throughout the United States, more than 75 percent of whom reside the northeast corridor.
